The Potter family has a rich history of modified racing in southeastern Wisconsin.
Claude Potter would be the most recognized and earliest of the family to make his
mark in the modified ranks long before the IRA had began. The A66 Robinson Oil
Sedan was owned by Larry Bill and would be one of Claudes first rides.
The most memorable car Claude drove would be the #98 Coupe
purchased from  Lee Weber. Even before getting a chance to put his
number on the car Claude took a fast time with it!  Later the Coupe would
be painted orange and white with the familiar #66 on it's side!
Here's a color photo of the Weber coupe!
Here's Claude with Joe Moulis in the
backround!
To the left we see Claude and Jack "At trackside" Biddison at the
announcers stand.
The color photo above in the center was labeled 1970.
Unfortunatly 1970 marks the year we lost Claude to a fatal highway
accident.
Three of Claude's sons have carried on the Potter racing tradition. Butch,
Leroy and Landry have all taken their turn behind the wheel! While Butch
and Leroy have gone into semi retirement from racing, Landry continues to
be a threat to win in any Late model he gets a seat in!
Butch is also a member of the Vintage Modified
Stock car Club. The Schuppel coupe he reworked
was quite a site! I'm sure his next project will be
equally impressive!
Here's a little known
Potter that raced a bit
while his brother
Claude raced!
The next Potter on the list would be Deane Potter!  The earliest picture of Deane comes
from 1974.  I credit Deane as the first guy to let me hang around a car at the track.
Check the tires, pull the mud off the car and check the header bolts. It wasn't to glamours
but I loved every minute of it!!  Deane had numerous cars over his career but none was
prettier than the Mother of Pearl, White Sedan that I had the pleasure of assisting with!
Deane retired to central Wisconsin a number of years ago. His sons Jay and Tim also carried
the racing torch in southern WI for a time. Tim worked for Five Star Stockcar Bodies for a
number of years before relocating to Nekoosa WI and starting his own fiberglass business!
Tim and Jay still play with Mini Sprints!
The last Potter brother that I would like you to recall could only be found in the pits!
Norm was the driving force behind all the Potter race cars! He wrenched on
everything his brothers hauled to the track!  We lost Norm a few years ago to MD.
Many would say he was loud and opinionated. Others would say he knew his stuff
and was happy to tell you, you were wrong! Those of us that really got to know him
knew that under that gruff exterior was a heart of gold! If you really knew Norm you'll
remember his infectious laugh!  I was lucky enough to be a part time resident of the
Norm Potter household in my younger days . Norm's son Greg and I go way back all
the way to kindergarden!                                                  God I miss that laugh!!
The above picture really made me
laugh! We always joked about
"Speed Secrets" and this made me
think about how some were collected!
What this picture really shows is Dick
Colburn pulling in next to Dean and
Norm helping get out the ramps!
Norm had fun helping his son Greg and his son-in-law Brian with their
street stocks.  Not quite Modifieds, but Norm felt these cars were no less
important!!  By this time MD had really started to take it's toll on Norm but
the oppertunity to work on any race car seemed to carry him away from his
pain.
This page is dedicated to Claude and Norm Potter!
Gone but not forgotten!!
Thanks to my old friend Greg for sharing
some of his Dad's favorite photo's with us!
